CAN I PUT DATABASE IN THE CLOUD?2017-12-08T02:49:58+05:00

Yes.

There are two options:

  • You can allocate a virtual machine in the cloud, install your favorite database on it, and operate it as if you were operating a database server that you own.
  • You can also simply pay for a database-as-a-service and dispense with worrying about the underlying machine, operating system or installation of a data base management system.

Both options have supporting arguments and we can help you decide which path is best for you.

HOW DO I FUND CLOUD COMPUTING?2017-12-08T02:44:25+05:00

AWS provides a Free Tier of usage, good for one year, which will enable you to explore cloud computing at low financial risk.

AWS backstops the Free Tier with additional research computing credits through a managed program available by filling out a one-page application and coordinating your efforts with us. Once you determine whether the AWS cloud works for you, there are various funding agencies that can help pay for your research.

IS THE CLOUD POWERFUL?2017-12-08T02:47:27+05:00

Yes.

This is why so many researchers rely on the cloud in this era of Big Data. Individual cloud machines come in many state-of-the-art flavors: GPU-intensive, compute-intensive, memory-intensive, low network latency, general purpose and so on. But there’s also a double-win for intensive science computation in the cloud: You do not have to wait for resources to become available, and, if you can parallelize your work, you can spin up large (or very large) clusters to finish your tasks quickly.

Example:

Suppose you have a highly parallel task that takes 40 hours on 20 nodes with 16 cores each. If you are sharing computing resources with other research groups, you may need to wait 24 hours—or maybe weeks—to use them, so your wall-clock time for one processing run becomes 64 hours or much longer. In the cloud, you can distribute your work among 2,000 machines, start immediately and run your work to completion in 30 minutes. The cloud has many strengths, and scalability is one of the biggest.

IS THE CLOUD SECURE?2017-12-08T02:41:58+05:00

Yes.

Physical resources reside in secure facilities, with independent auditing practices followed by the cloud vendors. Data are encrypted and host companies do not have access to those encryption keys. You (the account holder) manage access through user identities and access policies.

Once I get started, am I locked in with a particular vendor? Am I locked into the cloud forever?2017-12-08T02:46:03+05:00

No, you are not locked in.

We can show you technologies like Virtual Machines and Docker Containers that can be moved between cloud environments as you see fit. We can also help you with the details of data archival and relocation services. Because cloud-based technology so closely mirrors traditional computing, you will find that the flexibility of computing translates well to the cloud, including the flexibility to pack up and move on when you so desire.

WHAT ARE AVAILABILITY ZONES?2017-12-08T02:47:10+05:00

Q: How isolated are Availability Zones from one another?

Each Availability Zone runs on its own physically distinct, independent infrastructure, and is engineered to be highly reliable. Common points of failures like generators and cooling equipment are not shared across Availability Zones. Additionally, they are physically separate, such that even extremely uncommon disasters such as fires, tornados or flooding would only affect a single Availability Zone.

Q: Is Amazon EC2 running in more than one region?

Yes. Please refer to Regional Products and Services for more details of our product and service availability by region.

Q: How can I make sure that I am in the same Availability Zone as another developer?

We do not currently support the ability to coordinate launches into the same Availability Zone across AWS developer accounts. One Availability Zone name (for example, us-east-1a) in two AWS customer accounts may relate to different physical Availability Zones.

Q: If I transfer data between Availability Zones using public IP addresses, will I be charged twice for Regional Data Transfer (once because it’s across zones, and a second time because I’m using public IP addresses)?

No. Regional Data Transfer rates apply if at least one of the following is true, but is only charged once for a given instance even if both are true:

  • The other instance is in a different Availability Zone, regardless of which type of address is used.
  • Public or Elastic IP addresses are used, regardless of which Availability Zone the other instance is in.

WHAT IS THE CLOUD?2017-12-08T01:16:05+05:00

Cloud computing is an information technology paradigm that enables ubiquitous access to shared pools of configurable system resources and higher-level services that can be rapidly provisioned with minimal management effort, often over the Internet.

WHAT IS THE TYPICAL COST?2017-12-08T02:42:32+05:00

Cost depends on use.

We start with the ‘three cents’ rule of thumb: A modest machine with one CPU will cost you three cents per hour. Storing one Gigabyte of data for one month costs three cents. We partner with AWS to provide deep-dive consulting and a set of tutorials to help you get very accurate cost estimates.

WHAT IS WORDPRESS?2017-12-08T02:51:31+05:00

WordPress is open source web software that you can install on your web server to create your website, blog, community, or network. WordPress started out as a tool for blogging, but has evolved into a full-fledged Content Management System (CMS), capable of powering websites, networks, and communities.

WHY CHOOSE WORDPRESS?2017-12-08T02:52:14+05:00

One of the principal advantages of WordPress is that you are in control. Unlike remote-hosted scripts such as Blogger and LiveJournal, you host WordPress on your own server. Installation is very simple, as is the configuration. Unlike other software programs, there are not a million files to chmod nor are there dozens of templates to edit just to get your site set up and looking the way you want.

Also, Blog pages in WordPress are generated on the fly whenever a page is requested, so you do not have multiple archive pages clogging up your web space. Waiting for pages to rebuild is a thing of the past because template changes are made in scant seconds.

WordPress is built following W3C standards for XHTML and CSS, ensuring that your site is more easily rendered across standards-compliant browsers. Other browsers are supported with a few hacks; it’s a reality of the web that hacks are necessary.

Aggregator support is built-in with a number of standard RSS configurations already done for you, as well as Atom. Following standards make your WordPress site easier to manage, increases its longevity for future Internet technology adoption, and helps give your site the widest audience possible.
